The James LaBuhn Educational Scholarship

​​

The Michigan Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators has established the James LaBuhn annual educational scholarship grant program. Two scholarship grants, each in the amount of $1,000 are available each year. Each scholarship grant is to assist in paying tuition or other educational costs of individuals that intend to enter or in the fields of fire science, fire service, law enforcement, legal or insurance community. Recipients must be accepted into, or have applied for admission to an accredited institution, whether they are a vocational/technical school, a community college or four-year college/university.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible to apply for the James LaBuhn Scholarship Grant, applicants intend to enter the field or are currently engaged in fields involving fire science, fire service, law enforcement, legal or insurance community, and be:

  • Currently in their 12th grade of high school or completing a GED program and have applied to or been accepted into an accredited vocational/technical school, community college, or four-year college/university.

OR

​

  • Currently attending or have been accepted into an accredited vocational/technical school, community college or a four-year college/university.

 

AND

​

  • A person is eligible to receive The James LaBuhn Scholarship Grant ONLY once. If the applicant is not awarded the scholarship grant, they may reapply for the next available scholarship if they are continuing their education.

  • Applicants may be asked to appear for a personal interview.

 

APPLICATION:

  • Applicants must have satisfied all of the eligibility requirements listed above.

  • Make sure your application is complete, and all requested documents are included.

  • Please print or type information on application.

  • Mail completed application to: Michigan Chapter IAAI, PO Box 60, Dewitt, MI 48820, or email to admin@michiganiaai.org. (If emailed, please indicate this is a James LaBuhn Scholarship application on the subject line).

  • Applications must be postmarked or received electronically by April 15 of the year the scholarship is awarded.

 

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • All information will be classified as confidential and treated in a professional manner. The scholarship grant committee will assign each application a unique number, review applications, and make recommendations to the Michigan Chapter IAAI Board of Directors.

  • All applicants remain anonymous. The Michigan Chapter IAAI Board of Directors will consider the committee recommendations and make the final selections. Recipients will be notified of their award and will be invited to the annual Chapter banquet in May.

  • The scholarship award checks will be made payable to the recipient and the school the recipient is attending, or to cover other costs directly associated with their education that are approved by the scholarship grant committee and Board of Directors.
